  Romania and the Balkans

The image to the right shows a stylized contextual map of Romania. In 1996-1997, I lived in the northeast area, first in a village named Hârlaŭ, and then in a city named Iaşi. I worked for the Fundatia Soros pentru o Societate Deschis, or the Soros Foundation for an Open Society. It was an incredible working and living experience, and I was able to conduct some very interesting ethnographic research as the people of the region accommodated, resisted, facilitated, and adapted to the 'postsocialist' transformation. While there, I was also commissioned by the Soros Foundation and county officials in Iasi to conduct specific research.
